Chasing The High Flyer Of The Day - Don’t Do It!!
I am not a big fan of chasing the “hottest” play of the day. Too many traders feel they have to be in the “big one”, the one that went to the moon, etc., etc. I never felt that way when I was trading and still don’t. If you look at recent history, we have seen some, if not all, of the biggest loses reported on those “hotties”.
There are any number of stocks out there that have unique circumstances surrounding them. When news breaks about those stocks, they are sent up or down with incredible volume, making huge price swings. It is not unusual to see these movers make five or six dollar moves for a total swing of ten to twelve dollars. In the case of a Google [GOOG] or similar stocks, those swings could be much, much wider.
I’m not saying you should avoid these plays all together. Yet, sometimes it is better to wait until they settle down a bit before you make that leap of faith.
There are literally hundreds of stocks out there that, on any given day, will give you a much better opportunity to make a decent profit with one tenth the risk of trying to get in an out of these mania plays. But all too often, too many traders feel they have to be all over the trade of the day that everyone is going to be talking about tomorrow. Unfortunately, a lot of those talking about the play are going to be talking about being stuck in it because they got in at the high end of one those huge swings. Now they are buried in the stock because they failed to use DTM: Decisive Trade Management (Read: Traders, Defend Against the Dreaded Death Spiral http://www.traderaide.com/Selected_Articles/Articles_on_daytradin g.html).
Traders need to remember that it is not their job or goal to be right on top everything that is happening on Wall Street or in the markets. Nor is it their job to be right in the middle of things like a mania stock trade triggered by the hottest news story of the day.
Jake Berstein says if very well in his book, The Complete Day Trader: http://www.traderaide.com/books “It is not the job of the day trader to understand the whys and/or the wherefores of market movement. The day trader’s sole responsibilities are these: First, to end each day “flat,” that is, without any positions Second, to make a profit, now matter how large or small Third, to keep all losses small and manageable.”
Ok, now with that said, a lot of you are still going to try to make that trade. Here are a few suggestions that may help you get in and out with a profit.
1) Always use limit orders. 2) Make sure you are using the fastest broker/trading platform you can get. 3) Always use limit orders. 4) Enter with one half the normal lot size you usually trade with. Five hundred shares if you usually trade with one thousand share lots, one thousand share lots if you usually trade with two, etc., etc. 5) Always use limit orders. 6) Always have a stop loss in mind. 7) Always use limit orders.
Be ready to average if the stock turns against you or cut and run. The half lot entry gives you room to average or keeps the loss minimal if you feel you have to cut your losses. 9) Did I mention to always use limit orders?
10) Do not use more then ten to twenty percent of your capital to enter the trade. Even twenty percent may be too high if you are inclined to average.
Last piece of advice about making this trade… Don’t do it!!!
Happy trading!

How to Experience a Lucid Dream
Lucid dreaming means dreaming while you know that you are dreaming. The term was coined by Frederik van Eeden who used the word “lucid” in the sense of mental clarity. With practice nearly anyone can experience lucid dreams.
Lucidity is not the same as dream control. It is possible to be lucid and have little control over the dream. However, becoming lucid in a dream is likely to increase your ability to deliberately influence the events within the dream. With practice you may extend the amount of control that you have over dream events. Many lucid dreamers choose to do something permitted only by the extraordinary freedom of the dream state, such as flying.
Some people have objections to lucid dreams. They say that it is un-natural and could be harmful to the psyche. In my opinion this is not true at all. Perhaps if all of our dreams were lucid and controlled there may be some harm, but with our lucid dreams spread out among many “normal” dreams we have plenty of time for non-lucid dreaming.
While we are in a dream our mind accepts what we see and feel as reality. We often find ourselves in very unusual circumstances when compared to our waking life. You could be living in a different house or driving a different car. The sky could be green and the river yellow. In most cases we accept these things as being true. Why doesn’t the mind “think” ‘Hey! I don’t have this vehicle’ or ‘This isn’t where I live!’ or even ‘Hey! I know the sky isn’t supposed to be that color!’
This is what I call incongruities. Things in our dreams that are not “normal”. We must wonder, and many have, why our mind so readily accepts anything we experience within our dreams as being real. We know there are no monsters. We know the proper colors for things. We know our home and our daily life. While we are dreaming we often forget these things and we believe what we see in the dream.
Just knowing this and thinking about it can actually help you on your way to a lucid dream experience. An incongruity is one of the triggers to lucid dreaming. A trigger is that which inspires or begins lucidity.
Here is an example of this from one of my own lucid dreams:
I was driving a blue Ford Bronco down a dirt road. I think it was a late 70’s model. There was a young boy in the passenger seat. I was giving him a ride because his motorcycle had run out of gas. The bike was in the back. Suddenly I realized it. I did not own a blue Bronco! In the dream I slammed on the breaks and held my hands up. “I don’t own a Ford bronco!” I said, “I am dreaming!” from that point on I was lucid.
A recurring dream or nightmare can also be used as a trigger. If you have a recurring dream make a conscious effort to realize that you are dreaming the next time you are in that situation. If the dream involves a certain person or place try to think as you go to sleep, “The next time I see that house I will know that I am dreaming”. Since the dream is recurring it wont be long before you see that house, person, etc. This may take several attempts. Don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t work the very first time.
Another technique that works for a lot of people is asking yourself “Am I dreaming?” and leaving notes for yourself. Several times a day ask yourself the question aloud. Also write the question on a note and put it on the refrigerator. Put the same message in other places where you will see them throughout the day. Many people will find them self asking that question or seeing the question written on a note while they are actually dreaming. This will trigger a lucid dream.
My first lucid dream, that is the first one I had when I was trying to achieve lucidity, was triggered by a flying dream.
Try to go to sleep in the same place and around the same time as much as possible. It is best to sleep with silence as music or other sounds can affect your dreaming. If you do choose to listen to music while you are going to sleep choose soft and soothing music, preferably without vocals. Use the same music each time. Before you go to sleep concentrate on a trigger. My first time I said, “tonight I will fly”, aloud several times and I concentrated on it. The second night I had a flying dream but I did not become lucid. On the fourth night I had another flying dream and at that time I became lucid. I was then able to fly to wherever I wanted to!
The trigger or combination of triggers that you use will depend upon you. If you have a common dream theme this is a great trigger. Just concentrate on the next time that you see or experience that you will be dreaming. Think of it as often as you can while you are awake.
Lucid dreamers often comment to themselves in dreams. You may say aloud, “This is a dream! I know that I am dreaming.”
Make a list of questions that you have about dreams. Read the list often and look over it several times and concentrate on it before you go to bed.
Can you read text in a dream? Can you add numbers in a dream? These were some questions I had on my list at one time. I had read in a dream book that it was not possible to read text or to calculate numbers in a dream, but I didn’t believe it. I eventually found myself lucid in an office. I walked over to a calendar on the wall and I read the text describing a New England farm house. I turned to another man there and said, “You see? You can read text in a dream!” I turned back to the calendar to read again and found that the words had completely changed. That amazed me and I commented to the other man about it. Next I walked over to a desk and found a calculator. I added and subtracted numbers and came up with correct answers. Yes, you can read text and perform mathematics in a dream. I proved it to myself beyond any doubt and with more confidence than I ever could have by reading anything about dreams.
Keep a Dream Journal
Keeping a dream journal is one of the most effective tools to achieving lucid dreams. Try to write down your dreams as soon after you wake up as you can. Don’t just write a narrative of what took place in the dream. Record your thoughts and emotions felt. This will help you later on as you develop your dreaming research. Be sure to note all major elements, such as people, places, animals, etc.
Keeping a dream journal will also help you a great deal in understanding your non-lucid dreams. As you continue to write in your journal and re-read your previous entries you will begin to see parallels with your dreams and your life. Gradually you will be able to recognize what the symbols in your dreams are really saying to you.
Once lucid in a dream, people can often choose their actions and exert some deliberate control over the dream content. This ability has been utilized in the laboratory to study lucid dreaming and dream psychophysiology. For example, proof that lucid dreams occur in REM sleep was achieved by having subjects give a prearranged distinct signal with deliberate eye movements to mark the points in time when they realized they were dreaming. The dreamers’ reports of the eye movements they had made in the dreams corresponded exactly to their physical eye movements as recorded by means of electro-oculograms on a polygraph record. Reports from experiments conducted using eye movement signaling in lucid dreams can be found in the literature (Dane, 1984; Fenwick et al., 1984; Hearne, 1978; LaBerge, Nagel, Dement & Zarcone, 1981; Ogilvie, Hunt, Kushniruk, & Newman, 1983).
What Are The Benefits of Lucid Dreaming?
The scientific study of dreaming and REM sleep
A variety of psychological and recreational applications.
Lucid dreaming can be a powerful tool for overcoming nightmares
In therapy, lucid dreams appear to be promising for providing personal insight, assisting with integration, and as a safe environment for experimentation with new behaviors (LaBerge & Rheingold, 1990).
Many lay people are attracted to lucid dreaming because it offers an outlet for fantasy, an opportunity for adventure unfettered by the laws of physics or society, and free of risk. As such, lucid dreaming is for many a source of creative and inspiring recreation. Anecdotes indicate that lucid dreams are helpful for artistic creativity, problem-solving, and practicing skills for waking life (LaBerge & Rheingold, 1990).
Dreams hold the most vivid mental images attainable by most people. Lucid dreaming is probably the best method for achieving the benefits such as enhancing physical performance, learning, remembering and facilitating healing.

Can You be an Optimistic Realist?
One question you might have when you read this title is, “Why I want to be an optimist?” Or, even, “How could I be optimistic with life the way it is?” or “Who could be an optimist in today’s world?
And “today’s world” may mean to you that office you work in that’s so hopelessly understaffed and disorganized, or your inept boss, or terrorism, starvation and violence in the world, your personal inadequacies for facing your personal challenges, the lack of help around the house, your hyper 2 year old twin boys, spending your days reeling among the emotional states of your teenagers, your midlife-crisis spouse, and your aging mother, or any of the above.
I was reminded of this dilemma when I was cornered the other morning by a young woman who needed to get in my face about the fact that her husband had gotten in her face that morning about the “idiocy” of watching the Prince Charles thing when there were more important things going on in the world.
By the end of his tirade he had listed terrorism, cancer, the national budget crisis, and the legal system as things more worthy of our attention that were, at the same time, hopelessly screwed up. By the end of his tirade, her husband’s “pessimistic attitude” had been added to the list, as having “ruined” her day. And, had I allowed it, I could’ve added to the list that her retelling of the war story had “ruined” mine.
Let’s face it: it’s easier to be cynical. It’s also more realistic to be cynical.
If you’re the kind of person who has a need to be right, betting that the work project will be screwed up, that the marriage will never last, and that Bush will make another decision that will fail to make the world perfect are surer bets than the opposite.
And so, if you’re negative and pessimistic, you’ll more often be right. But look at what else you’ll get: you’ll attract to yourself people who feel the same way and will join you in a negative downward spiral; you’ll be quick to blame anything but yourself, leaving yourself feeling hopeless and helpless as well as angry; you’ll waste a lot of time belaboring the obvious; and you’ll also stress yourself and your immune system.
Negative thinking leads to negative emotions which bring on physiological reactions which can damage your health in the short-term and in the long-term. Being optimistic doesn’t mean not being realistic.
It means making choices that influence outcomes, because they can also be self-fulfilling. If you’re sure your secretary is going to fail you again, she will. We are all influenced by the energy around us, and who can function when someone is hovering around them who thinks she or he is “an idiot”? Also, if you’re determined she will fail you, you must make that happen to defend your ego, and so what else can you think when it’s over? She failed you.
Realism would say - if you truly hired the wrong person, don’t be a victim. Take care of the problem.
If you hired a person who, like everyone else, has good days and bad, works in an imperfect system, has to try and read your mind and accommodate to your admittedly difficult disposition at times, and is over-worked, don’t play the victim - look at the system and see what you can do to make things work better, assuming (optimistically) that this is possible, i.e., things will never be perfect, but they can generally be improved upon, and YOU are the one to do it.
You could start, in that instance, with your own attitude and expectations.
In fact, if you want to make the world a better place, start with your secretary’s “world.” Get it?
Pragmatically speaking - that is, if you want to function in the real world - an optimistic view works better. It gives you the energy to make things happen, because it gives you positive emotional energy.
Functionally-speaking, it is wiser to be optimistic. Optimism is a tool, therefore. If you can still that voice in your head that says everything stinks, you can begin to see what you can do about things as they are, some of which, yes, “stink,” but not all.
If you’re plagued by the suffering of terrorism and tsunamis, for instance, set aside a time to figure out what YOU can do about them. You will quickly realize the dilemma of world leaders who actually have to do this on a grand scale; but you will also find small things you can do in your own world to address these ills. Call your local Red Cross. They’ve been waiting for your call. IN THE MEANTIME, keep your own life going in a positive direction, with optimism. If you’re determined that you can’t be happy until all the ills of the world have been addressed, you’ll be a long time waiting. You will also fail to address what you can address, because of lamenting over larger things which basically are beyond your control.
If you want to turn around your attitude, turn your face in another direction. To focus on what’s right about things doesn’t mean you don’t KNOW what things are wrong, or how wrong they are. It means you’re making a choice about your own portion of the world, your responsibility in it, and your outlook.
Does it help “the world” if you go on a tirade first thing in the morning and dump all your frustration on your spouse? Of course not. Remember you and your spouse are also a part of “the world.”
>From an objective position, the young man mentioned above has a good job, a nice home, plenty of food, clothing and necessities, and a lovely wife who was cheerful, lovely, and dressed to go to her job for the day. That’s a scene half the people in this will never have.
Optimism means, in the words of Faulkner, not “slaying the real for the unreal.” The moment this young man had was real, and it was good. Then he got into his own head and dragged up all the reasons he could think of to be unhappy; reasons which exist and are available to all of us, but so is the contentment of the immediate reality.
It’s almost like he takes pride in being able to figure out there are ills in the world, as if he were only one who knew this and were concerned about it.
For an example of what your self-talk does to you, consider this scenario. Let’s say Fred is feeling low. He thinks his life is impossible; it contains the usual array of hard work, too much stress, arguments with his wife and kids, a puppy that won’t get house-broken, and a home plumbing system that keeps backing up.
However, his job, wife and kids are all within “the normal range.” He walks outside and has a chat with his neighbor. The neighbor has a 23 year old son who is schizophrenic and lives with him and his wife. They are retired, living on a limited income, and suffering health problems. Most of us would say, “There but for the grace of God go I,” and go back inside with a prayer for the neighbor, but a sense of gratitude for our own set of problems, which is much smaller and somehow seems, now, more manageable.
Fred, the pessimist, however, goes back inside feeling lower than ever, having decided that if the world is that awful, why try at all.
Pessimism has its roots in our beliefs, which feed into our expectations. If a perfect world is one of your beliefs, or the feeling that you can’t be happy until you live in a perfect world, why not take it out and have another look. Write down your core beliefs and then go over them with optimism and pessimism in mind.
Now, in Spanish there are two “to be” verbs. One, ser, means a permanent state, such as, I am a woman. Soy mujer. The other is for temporary states, such as, I am furious. Estoy enojada. English doesn’t make this distinction by means of different verbs, but I will close this using “be” in the ’state’ sense, not ‘trait’ sense: You can be pessimistic [trait] and still survive. We all know people who are and do. But it may be necessary to be optimistic [state] if you want to thrive.
Learn about optimism and have it available. Be able to change your self-talk and attitude. This flexibility will develop your emotional intelligence, and in the long run, the happiness you save may be your own.

MetaPrograms Accessing Cues
The credit for inspiring me and giving the idea to work on this goes to Eric Robbie - in July 2005 in Mexico on Master Prac course he only mentioned Meta Programs Accessing Cues and I thought - WOW. It was sort of the feeling psychologists get when they discover fast phobia cure - they go, “Hey!! We can do it in five minutes instead of 10 years!!”
I definiately was not the biggest fan of Meta Programs - I knew they were important, but recognizing them linguistically felt like loss of time; I never found a trainer who congruently was always able to utlize them. Then there was the idea that what is more important than Meta Programs themselves is the sequence of them - I thought that worked better, since never in my life did I find anyone who would always have this particular MP or other - too often they were used as as just another way of categorizing people.
Let`s say there`s a polarised person and they will do just the opposite to what you say and do. If you wanted to recognize this Meta Program verbally - you would need more time and risk more. You come up to the person, say: “I have this contract for you”, and what they do in their head is already against what you are planning to achieve - it`s too late. What you were after was saying: “Probably you wouldn`t be interested in this” - they do the opposite, there you go. The question is - how would you know what to say?
The idea of accessing Meta Programs non-verbally opened many doors. First, you don`t need to ask - you just know before they open their mouth. Second, I noticed a common misconception that MP`s deal mainly with language - I believe they do, but my guess it they are much more behavioural then linguistic. Think about it - compare two people, one motivated towards, one motivated away from. Think about the way they move when talk about their goals. The way a procedure person gestures. The way a reactive person looks at you.
The way I have been discovering all these basically comes down to three stages - initially for a few weeks I would compare in my head bahaviour, voice and looks of the people I know have this or that MP. This would give me some idea how they differed. This also lead me to good conclusions - obviously MP`s come in different “sizes and shapes”, but there were many coomon features too. Then I would practise - assess MP`s of a person before I started talking to them and later verbally check my predictions. Finally - and this text is the result of this- on my last Master Prac In Warsaw, Poland, I gave my students a special task which took us two full days. Results were astonishing and very creative.
I gave all them a sheet which looked the way you see it here:
REPEATED WORDS GRAMMAR STRUCTURES VOICE BODY GESTURES
FACE SUBMODALITIES INTERNAL DIALOGUE KINESTHETICS
OTHER
On a flipchart, so that everyone could see, I put a list of 15 most popular MP`s. It stayed there for a few days, during which I would nest many stories, refer to them from time to time and point in a humorous way to some bahaviours of my students in the seminar which defined certain kind of MP. In other words, I was preparing them for a few days so that they practically realised what MP`s were about.
Then the day came and I handed them the sheets you can see above. I diveded them in groups of three and gave each one a task.
The first person was to “have” a certain MP. In other words I believed you can tell someone to be for instance a proactive type and they will. I gave them new temporary identities. And I hoped that everything else - bahaviour, beliefs, intonation and voice, vocabulary, the way of talking, maybe even some reinterpratation of values - would follow; and my predictions were right. Call someone a hunk no matter what they look like, make them believe in it and there you go. It does work.
This proved also, though they didn`t realise that quickly, that the way I did it presupposed that MP`s can be changed - if you can have any given in an exercise and congruently “function” with it, then obviously it teaches that you can choose which one you want to have and when. The second person was the one starting a conversation - we chose very simple stuff, like going out together, planning which movie to see etc. - this part did not matter.
The third person was to observe the two - not say a word, just see, hear and feel.
After like 5-minute conversation I asked all them to quietly fill the sheet with their observations. Notice - doing so I had three different perspectives, since the first one was “me”, the second “you”, and the third one “they”. When they were done I asked them to compare individual observations within the group and notice what was similar. Then we would do the same with me and compare what all groups had - notice similarities, agree congruently in what was there and make conclusions. This article is the result of what we did.
If you notice, I chose ten categories to focus on. Some of them in certain situations did not prove to be useful - in others they were crucial.
1. Repeated words obviously dealt with what they were saying. For the purpose of the exercise which mainly did with non-verbal part, words used were not so much important, and they were an obvious consequence of other observations. You could even predict what the person was going to say on the basis of other things. But still, useful.
2. Grammar structures played important role in a few cases - especially proactive/reactive MP`s. We also paid attention which MP was more asking than stating or negating.
3. Voice was absolutely crucial - we focused on intonation, speed, pace and other submodalities.
4. Body dealt with posistion, which quite often presupposed internal mechanisms. Obviously if you get a person who sits bending down, head down, shoulder slack, they are bahaviorally proesupposed to make small pictures close to their heads - if the floor blocked your way so would you!!
5. Gestures to me always helped to discover submodalities - they would draw in front of my eyes, point where Internal Dialogue was coming from or where things were. In this case this is also true.
6. Face is made of more than 80 muscles working together - in communication it reflects so much, that I am sure people underestimate its rich meaning. Many times they would say “there`s something in the face which tells me this…” etc. without being able to precisely state what it was. Interestingly, this took place here too.
7. Submodalities were mainly accessesed by Eric`s SMEAC`s - we dealt with the most important things, like sizes, numbers, shapes, colours, distance, leaving some less important aside. Association and dissociation in many situations was crucial.
8. Internal dialogue was crucial - we treated it as basically internal equivalent of external voice, just that ID wouldn`t be heard on the outside and is definiately primary to external voice. We paid special attention to intonation patterns and content of what it said.
9. Kinesthetics is based on what the 1st, 2nd and 3rd person were feeling. We described and categorized it (”relaxed”, “tense” etc.) rather than described submodalities
10. Other was the pot for anything else that came to our heads
The following is the description of our observations and conclusions - by no means do I claim the list is exhaustive or always works - what`s more, I`m absolutely positive there`s so much more to discover and uncover that this is just a peak of an iceberg. I chose things that worked for us, avoided mind reading and speculating what “could be” there, just focused on what we saw, heard and felt without interpreting it. E-mail me (info@mateuszgrzesiak.com) with your ideas and feedback, Meta Programs Accessing Cues is a fantastic thing to work on and it can move us much forward in our learnings and teachings.
1. Proactive and reactive MP
- Active type is a leader - he chooses most of the decisions himself, often basis on internal standards and authority. He uses first person singular (”I”) or plural (”We”). His sentences are semantically well-formed with absolutely characteristic use of active voice. He speaks fluently, confidently, specifically. Body position suggests self-confidence, he plants himself often, head and shoulders straight up. Deep breathing. Makes big, often panoramic pictures, 3D, vety often associated - this influences his kinesthetics, because Active`s are the type who gesture, move, switch their position often. He leads more than paces. Little or no internal dialogue, if so - hardly ever anything verbalised, rather silent subconscious intonation patterns like - “mmmmmmmm”, which strenghten his state and power of persuasion. His chunks up rather than down and moves to options rather than procedures.
- Reactive type avoids responsibility and is more prone to feel guilty. He basis on external standards and authority. Wants decisions to be made instead of making them. Crucial use of passive voice - “it has to be done”, “it must”, “one should”. Asks many questions (rather than states statements) , because prefares when the answers come from different sources than himself. Interestingly, when he is asked to perform or decide, often he will go into “don`t want to” or “confused what to do” states. Uses obligation (”must”, “have to”) and necessity (”should”), which automatically makes him motivated in away from manner. A lot of internal dialogue searching content-wise for answers and installing doubt. Many small pictures without specific content, often blurred, moving around. Dissociates himself, which makes sense with his behaviour - he sees himself in situations as marionette and subject of decisions rather than source of them. “Placetor” in Satir categories - pleads, apologises, takes guilt, is sorry. He might be tense often, face expresses anticipation.
2. Motivation towards and away from
- Motivated towards are easy to spot - they state things in positive and avoid nagation. The crucial point is that they like the things they “want”, not “should” or “must”. This difference is very important - motivated towards chooses a corrot and dislikes the stick. His voice is often excited, more relaxed and confident. He can “turn on” like madcap, shows his emotions, experiences externally, enjoys more. In non-NLP language he`s an optimist, what is obviously connected with “positive” submodalities he`s making - tons of pleasant colors and a lot of brightness. The bigger the size of the picture, the more “turned on” they will be. They “have no time” for ID, if it`s there in hardly ever verbalized, rather goes into intonation patterns which enrich their states. A lot of eye movements going in different directions, often jumping from a picture to picture or seeing a big, panoramic one. A lot of gestures, used to desribe and emphasise submodalities. They smile a lot - thinking about nice feeling they will have which comes from the picture they make simply makes them feel good. A loop is created - picture makes them feel good, kinesthetic reaction is evoked, which makes the submodalities more intense, which influences kinestehtics and so on.
- Motivated away from - this type avoids bad experiences. Often they use obligation (”have to” and “must”). Sentences are well chosen and thought over; logical, rational computer. Often they give reasons why. Pictures are dark compared with towards motivation and dominated by black, grey, dark green, blue colours (they will even say this verbally, like ” I have dark thought about this). These are rather movies, usually with unpleasant ending. Doesn`t smile too much. Face is darker, greyish, after years with more wrinkles and lips curling down. They use “what if” very often and polarise to what people say. The emotion which they get when halucinated evil doesn`t happen is only a relief - which is an example of stick motivation. They explain themselves with “I want to avoid the worst” when calles pessimists. A lot of ID with horrible intonation. Characteristic, when they walk or move they often lose rhythm and fluency - I believe it`s due to internal incongruence (he rushes to work to avoid his boss scolding him, which makes him feel bad and it influences his “flow”). I believe - and it is my guess - that these people die from heart attacks more than anyone else. Funny, I also think there are more men motivated away from than women. Voice is often sad, disappointed, worried.
3. Internal and external standards
- Internal standards and authority - he believes his assessments and judgements more than the others. Often polarised to what the others say, especially if concerns himself to have authority on the topic. Confident voice, often with a manner. Words like “me”, “I” appear in different variants. Easy to manipulate by giving compliments and confirming he`s right. Once I watched a cartoon - Johnny Bravo it was - and Johnny was picking up a girl. After talking about himself for long, finally he goes - “But dear, let`s not talk about me, let`s talk about you! So, what do you think of me?” Body is straighten up, focused on his speakers, he loves argumenting. Firm body position, planted. Gestures used to emphasise he`s right, like for example pointing to himself, open hand moving in the air, a fist. Makes many pictures in frames, contrasted and content-specific. Often associated. ID is usually only his. Kinesthetics often based on self-control and confidence. Paradoxally, he sometimes needs to know opinions of others. Uses active voice.
- External standards and authority - looks for external confirmation. Makes small and distanced pictures of what he thinks and bigger and closer of the others. Many pictures flow around his head, sometimes without any content, which may confuse him. They can be often one of many sources of information. A lot of ID of external origin, i.e. he hears other people talking in his head with authoritative or authoritarian intonation. He loses rhythm while talking to others, because tries to do both things at a time - be up-time and talk to you and in-time listening to ID. Uses external reference like “they said”. Might be reactive. Less focused on the speaker, trances out often, his faces expresses conentration, reflexion or looking for something. He quotes a lot.
I couldn`t publish everything - too long it is.

Scots Beat Yanks in China Bank Deal
With visions of an ATM in every neighborhood in China, foreign banks and investment firms are queuing up to join the “China Club.”
Moneybags Communism
The initiation fee for the “China Club” is straightforward and pure moneybags communism: invest cold hard cash in its largely insolvent state-owned banks, put your reputation on the line, reassure nervous foreign investors about upcoming IPO’s, and share your risk management, corporate banking and other expertise with eager Chinese executives. The benefits of membership in the China Club are alluring but mostly maybes. Perhaps you will get some of your money back by underwriting an IPO or working in China with the bank in the areas of wealth management, credit cards or corporate banking.
But the temptation is too much too resist and they are lining up for membership. Bank of America, the German bank Allianz, Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, UBS, and the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) have all agreed to or are in ongoing negotiations to take equity stakes in China’s big four state-owned banks. There is another twist to the tale. Membership fees are not the same for everyone but are negotiated one by one and this can leave a sweet or sour taste depending on the deal that’s cut.
Paying More for Uncertainty
The recent deal inked by the Royal Bank of Scotland led consortium is the best so far and beats the well publicized Bank of America deal hands down.
Bank of America purchased a 9% stake in China Construction Bank for $3 billion. The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) invested $1.6 billion for a 5% stake and brought along Merrill Lynch and Hong Kong tycoon Li-Ka Shing along to share the risks bringing the total investment to $3.1 billion for a combined 10% stake. The RBS group also paid less than Bank of America which paid 1.2 times stated book value. Even better than putting up less cash and getting slightly better value, the Scots were able to extract a life preserver from their Chinese partners. While details have not been released, the RBS group will get some of their money back if there are black holes in the books, if the IPO scheduled for early next year is cancelled or if the banks just don’t see eye to eye.
Thank You. May I Have Another
The question is will membership fees decrease over time or get steeper? Goldman Sachs and Allianz are in talks to pay about $1 billion for a stake in China’s largest state-owned bank - the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China. China favored UBS is also discussing an investment of $500 million in the Bank of China to cement its lead underwriting role in next years IPO.
This rush by foreign banks to get a piece of the China action should make shareholders pause. Just like when you join the local country club, there are unforeseen risks and expenses. Soon the monthly dues are raised and then there are the dreaded “special assessments” for new greens, a swimming pool or a new irrigation system.
Risk, Return - Maybe?
China’s large state-owned banks have an enormous burden of non-performing loans made over the years to poorly performing state-owned companies. With a small minority stake, foreign banks will have very limited say about the management of their partner bank. As the old banking adage goes, if you owe the bank a little money, the bank owns you, if you owe the bank a lot of money, you own the bank. For investment banks, the payoff seems even slimmer. Investment banking and underwriting fees are notoriously slim in Asia and IPO after market appreciation will have to be substantial to enjoy a risk-adjusted return.
And don’t even think of missing a payment. Last year Citigroup was chosen to underwrite a $5 billion listing for China Construction Bank after offering to purchase an equity stake. It was later dropped like a hot potato after failing to follow through.
I hope all of these banks make lots of money in China - but it may not be wise to trade billions of hard earned capital for a maybe.

New U.S. Mint Coins a Golden Opportunity
In April, the U.S. Mint revealed plans to strike in early 2006 new .9999 bullion coins to go after the growing world market for .9999 fine (24-karat) gold coins. Studies show that pure gold coins claim 60% of the world’s gold bullion coin market, which is some $2.4 billion annually. The Royal Canadian Mint’s Maple Leafs hold the number one spot for pure gold coins. However, problems with Maple Leafs have surfaced.
If the Mint avoids the problems that have developed with Gold Maple Leafs, it has a golden opportunity to grab an even bigger share of the gold bullion coin market. The U.S. Mint’s American Gold Eagles are the best selling 22-karat gold coins in the world.
Despite being the world’s best-selling 24-karat gold coins, 1-oz Maple Leafs’ design and packaging leave them susceptible to damage. As a result, Gold Maple Leafs have fallen in disfavor among U.S. gold bullion coin investors. Indications are that gold bullion coin investors worldwide have the same frustrations with 1-oz Gold Maple Leafs.
It is nearly impossible to remove, inspect, and put 1-oz Gold Maple Leafs back in their tubes without scratching them, no matter how carefully done. Gold Maple Leafs have smooth, clear fields around Queen Elizabeth’s likeness and sharp milled edges. As the coins are put back in their tubes, the edges scratch the fields–and sometimes the Queen’s raised image.
And, Heaven forbid that a 1-oz Gold Maple Leaf is dropped on a floor or even a hard tabletop. But, most of the damage is done when investors handle the coins. If Gold Maple Leafs are handled roughly, as investors are used to handling Krugerrands and Gold Eagles, Gold Maple Leafs are easily damaged. Consequently, many badly damaged Gold Maple Leafs have come back into the secondary market.
Until a few years ago, Gold Eagles and Maple Leafs sold at the same markups over spot. But, as Maple Leafs, which investors have bought since 1979, started coming into the secondary market, problems surfaced. Now, to keep investors in the U.S. market buying Maple Leafs, the Royal Canadian Mint has to offer new (current year) Gold Maple Leafs at a half-a-percent below Gold Eagle prices.
Damaged 1-oz Gold Maple Leafs are such a problem that one important secondary market maker stopped dealing in the coins for a while. The head trader said he did not have time to discuss with buyers and sellers the conditions of the coins. Further, he said his staff did not have time to inspect each coin and classify it as to the amount of damage. It is commonplace for sellers to say the coins are in “perfect condition.” Yet when Gold Maple Leafs arrive, they often are badly scratched or rim nicked.
Another major bullion dealer (perhaps the nation’s largest) currently buys back “perfect” Gold Maple leafs from established dealers at a little over spot, which means investors receive less than spot if their dealers unload to this firm. For scratched or damaged coins, this firm pays less than spot, which enables the firm to send the coins to a refinery at a profit if the firm has no buyers for Gold Maple Leafs.
The secondary dealer returned to trading Gold Maple Leafs but buys all them only at prices that enable him to profitably melt the coins if they are really beat up. As noted, because of the problem with secondary market Gold Maple Leafs, the Royal Canadian Mint has to price Gold Maple Leafs below Gold Eagles to entice investors to take Gold Maple Leafs in the U.S. market.
Luckily–the free market being what it is–there are dealers who will take the time to evaluate Gold Maple Leafs and pay more for the ones in better condition. Still, the spread (the difference between what an investor can buy and sell for at any moment) on “perfect” Gold Maple Leafs is about $4 wider than on Gold Eagles. However, the U.S. Mint’s new 24-karat gold coins need not be problem coins.
For example, the 1-oz Austrian Philharmonics and The Perth Mint’s 1-oz coins are .9999 fine. Yet, these coins are not easily damaged during normal handling because of their designs and/or their packaging.
Philharmonics come ten to a tube and can be taken out and put back in their tubes without scratching. The Perth Mint coins come individually encapsulated in hard plastic capsules. As long as Perth Mint coins remain in their capsules, they maintain their perfect conditions.
Hopefully, the U.S. Mint knows of the problems with Gold Maple Leafs and will design its new .9999 fine coins and their packaging so that the coins are not easily scratched or damaged. If the Mint opts to go with packaging its new coins in tubes, as it does Gold Eagles and as Philharmonics are packaged, then the Mint needs to avoid milled edges.
Although Gold Eagles have milled edges, old U.S. gold coins ($20 Libs and St. Gaudens) were minted with lettering on the edges. So, lettering is not new to the U.S. Mint. With lettering, the edges can be smooth, making the coins less likely to scratch other coins in handling. Philharmonics, which are not prone to damage, have lettering on their edges.
[Over the centuries, mints learned to design gold coins to guard against “shaving,” a process by which a small amount of metal is “shaved” from the edges. Milled edges that have been shaved are clearly detectible. Light lettering on the edges solves the problem as well. If no lettering can be seen on coins that are known to have been minted with lettering, then the coins have been shaved and no longer have their original gold content.]
As do Maple Leafs, Perth Mint .9999 fine gold coins have milled edges and carry a likeness of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse (front). However, to protect its coins from damage, The Perth Mint encapsulates them in plastic capsules. When Perth Mint bullion coins are removed from their capsules and put in tubes, the coins are susceptible to scratching as are Maple Leafs.
In going after a piece of the $2.4 billion .9999 fine gold bullion coin market, the Mint needs to consider the mindset of bullion coin investors. Bullion coin investors seek alternatives to paper money; they are not coin collectors. Bullion coin investors prefer coins packaged so that they can be easily stored and secured.
This means the Mint should package the coins twenty to a tube, which has become–primarily because of Gold Eagles–the preferred method. Five tubes conveniently total one hundred coins. Further, the tubes should be made of the same durable plastic from which Gold Eagle tubes are made. Hard plastic tubes, such as those used for Philharmonics, can and do break when dropped. Gold Eagle tubes, on the other hand, are virtually indestructible.
For protection against “shaving,” the Mint should design its new coins with lettered edges. Lettered edges would make the coins much less susceptible to scratching.
The Mint is going after the bullion coin market, and bullion investors like to feel and heft their coins. Packaging the coins in tubes enables investors to more easily inspect their coins. Collectors, on the other hand, want their coins in as pristine condition as possible. Although capsules are excellent for protecting collector coins, coins individually packaged in capsules require more space for storage. The other aspect that the Mint has to consider is the coin’s theme.
The Mint should make the theme something uniquely American, as it did with its American Eagles coins. For the Gold Eagles, the Mint chose a slimmed-down rendition of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ famed Standing Liberty, which he created in 1907 to grace a new Double Eagle ($20 gold coin). Nearly one hundred years later, the Saint Gaudens, which the coin is now called, is viewed as the most beautiful coin produced by the U.S. Mint.
For its Silver Eagles, the Mint chose A. A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design, which was used on half-dollars 1916-1947. Walking Liberty halves are among the most popular silver coins ever turned out by the U.S. Mint. Judging by the success of the Silver Eagles program (more than 128 million sold since their inception), putting the Walking Liberty on Silver Eagles was the right move.
Some may argue that the Standing Liberty and the Walking Liberty designs are being used in the American Eagles program, and, therefore, the Mint should go onto another design. However, the Standing Liberty and the Walking Liberty are immediately identified as American by the world’s bullion coin buyers. Besides, is not Miss Liberty as much our nation’s icon as is the eagle?
If the U.S. Mint avoids the problems that have surfaced with Gold Maple Leafs and offers gold bullion coin investors a strong alternative, then it has a golden opportunity to capture a big share of the .9999 fine gold bullion market. With the right planning, the Mint could shake the Maple Leaf’s hold on the .9999 bullion coin market.

Lessons We Learned From Terri Schiavo
Let’s talk about Terry Schiavo, since her death illustrated for me many aspects of grief and hope. Who among us was not moved by the drama of her last days? I know I was. Her death was not the way I would want my own death to be. When my time comes, I want no heroic measures, since for me they simply postpone the inevitable. And watching the family feud that took place between her husband and her parents, with all the tension and the anger, saddened me terribly. Peace should be the last emotion Terry felt, but who knows if she heard only the angry words passed between those she loved. No one should have to die as she did.
What a shame. At the same time, look at the two different approaches to grief presented to us, one by her husband Michael and the other by her parents the Schindlers. Michael was clearly ready to “lay her gently down,” he was prepared to move on with his new life and to “begin again” with his fiancee and two young children. Some say he was ready a bit too soon, but I disagree. Grief takes as long as it needs, there is no clock for the soul. Her parents, on the other hand, were clearly unable to give her up yet. It is understandable that parents would be so protective of their kids, and I don’t know what I would do if, God forbid, one of my own kids was in a similar state.
I am not judging, just pointing out the differences in style and approach in this wrenching drama. For Terri’s parents, despite how they may feel now, they must know that there is still hope for them. There is a new future which they will soon help create; there will be new challenges for them and their family which they cannot yet know. When you are grieving, you often lose sight of the future, because the present is so draining. But no matter what has been taken from you there is hope. They still have each other and they still have a life in front of them. I certainly pray that they will find healing and consolation, and that Terri’s memories will bring them peace.

Why Search Engine Traffic Should be Your Top Priority
Most Internet marketing methods are risky and many will not have any affect on traffic to a web site. Some online marketers will sell you anything from banner impressions, to mass email campaigns (spam), to popup ads. All these marketing tools can work, but they are also extremely risky. Some people I know find pop-ups and spam so annoying that they will never purchase anything from a business that uses them. These plans are probably not the best customer acquisition strategies, and more likely they are a total waste of money. So why would anyone bother risking money on marketing strategies that probably will not increase traffic to your website? Why not concentrate on what does work? - The search engines.
Have you ever been contacted by online marketers who promise to deliver a “ton of traffic” to your website” ? I get these emails every day. Here’s a quote from one I used to get 10 times a day (until I automatically filtered it to trash):
“Hi I visited www.metamend.com, and noticed that you’re not listed on some search engines! I think we can offer you a service which can help you increase traffic and the number of visitors to your website.
I would like to introduce you to thispromotioncompany.com. We offer a unique technology that will submit your website to over 300,000 search engines and directories every month.
You’ll be surprised by the low cost, and by how effective this website promotion method can be.
To find out more about thispromotioncompany and the cost for submitting your website to over 300,000 search engines and directories, visit www.thispromotioncompany.com. (…)”
Have you ever received one, and wondered why they were contacting you? First off, how did they find your web site? What search engines are they referring to? If they really could deliver on their promise, then they would have so much repeat, and word of mouth business, that they wouldn’t have time to be calling or emailing you. Lastly, how many people actually believe that there are 300,000 search engines?
While it’s true you need traffic from the search engines, you don’t need to use spam techniques to get it. You need real results, and not false hope.
Increase Web Site Traffic,.. Naturally
It is true that the best way to obtain lots of targeted traffic (customers) is to acquire it based on relevance, via the search engines. Various studies show that anywhere from 83% to 92% of first time visitors to a web site find it through the search engines. That’s an incredible statistic. If you are not acquiring those customers as a result of a relevant query, then they will be disappointed. They may be disappointed with the search result, but more likely, they will be disappointed with your web site.
In the online world that’s your first impression. We all know how important a first impression is. You can never get a bad one back, and a good one will carry you a long way. You have to make sure that the search engines are sending you visitors that are looking for your products or services. If your web site matches their interests, they will remember it, and come back, even if they do not make a purchase on that visit. If they find it irrelevant, they may have subconsciously formed a negative opinion of your online business, through no fault of your own.
Search engines provide a continuous stream of targeted visitors to your website, and for the most part, it’s free of charge. Some engines do charge a listing fee, but most do not. The only thing the search engine asks is that each web site operator makes an effort to provide relevant and good information to web surfers for a particular search phrase. If a web site does so, the search engines will reward the site with increased good quality traffic.
Search engine traffic is a win-win situation for any online business. It doesn’t take much to improve on most web site’s search engine traffic - it just takes optimization. Did you know that as of January 1 2002, there were 160,000,000 domain hosts in use worldwide? Did you know that 88% of the web pages worldwide are not indexed by the largest search engines? 88% of web pages are not optimized. How can any business survive on the Internet if it is not optimized for the search engines, and thus can never be found? How can they exist if over 83% of first time visitors never find their web site? How much more money could a web site operator earn if they ensured their web site was even partially visible?
If you have an informative web site, the search engines want to send you lots of customers. That’s because the more web surfers find what they want, the more they’ll use a particular search engine and recommend it to their friends. The search engine also benefits, as it becomes known as a resource that gets its clients - the searchers - to their destinations quickly and efficiently. The more people recognize how well the engine works as a resource, the more it gets recommended, and used. As the popularity increases, so do the engine’s revenues from advertising.
What Does Your Web Site Need To Receive Traffic From The Search Engines?
Small web sites with only 1 or 2 pages set themselves up for failure, simply because they usually don’t have enough content of interest. There are of course exceptions, where the 1 or 2 pages are each as long as a book. But these are awfully frustrating to read, and no one will be satisfied with them. Most often 1 or 2 page sites are simply too short to provide any useful information, so the search engines don’t take them seriously. Among other factors, the search engines examine how deep a site is. The more meaningful content present, the more weighty the site is viewed as, and the more importance it is given.
If you are wondering about whether to bother, ask yourself this: Why does your company have a web site? What does the company do with it? Think about it. Most companies today have web sites, and most market the web sites to facilitate customer acquisition, to increase their customer base, and to improve customer retention rates.
There are a number of reasons for having web sites. Many companies use theirs to enhance their customer service. Using a web site as a marketing vehicle is a great way for a company “to put the word out” about products, services, or offerings.
Most importantly, remember that your web site is an online resource that your clients can use to find answers to frequently asked questions, “how to” tips, and to educate themselves. When including content on a web site, always remember that the knowledge shared may be common to you, but it’s likely that you are an expert in the eyes of your clients. People visit your web site for your product or service, but also for information. If they find useful, relevant, information, they will keep coming back, and will likely make purchases. People like to buy from experts.
Instead of thinking of your web site as nothing more than an online billboard or business card, think of it as an online menu, that lets people get an idea of what it is you do, and how you do it. Develop a content rich website, optimize it, and let the search engines increase your website traffic, naturally. If you optimize each major web page within your site, you will increase the rankings in the search engine results and therefore receive targeted traffic for each of those pages.
Doing each of the above - ensuring relevant content is present, and optimizing the pages - will ensure that the search engines have what they need so they can do their work. It will also ensure that they can send you targeted traffic (customers), so that you can get that 83% of first time visitors your online business needs to survive.
